Ford Focus Electric approved for HOV lanes in California 0

The Ford Focus Electric has suddenly become more attractive to the residents of California after being made able to drive in High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes.

The Focus Electric can drive in HOV lanes

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has approved the car to be submitted into HOV lanes. The car was approved for California’s Clean Vehicle Rebate Program (CVRP). With the mass congestion in California causing great problems, the Ford Focus Electric will be able to use lanes which are free. The HOV lanes are similar to bus lanes that we have in the UK. Every motorist has wanted to shift to this particular lane during high levels of congestion.

Tax rebate

If that wasn’t good enough, a tax rebate of $2,500 has been approved when the car is purchased.

MPGe statistics

The vehicle is quite amazing in terms of economy and efficiency. It can achieve 110 MPGe in the city and 99 MPGe and 105 MPGe when combined. Despite being an electric vehicle it does achieve a respectable top speed of 84 MPH. On a single charge the car can achieve a brilliant 100 miles on a single charge.

Available in 19 states at the end of the year

To start with the car will only be sold in California, New York and New Jersey to start with. By the end of 2012 it is expected that the Ford Focus Electric will be sold in a total of 19 states.

Providing a cleaner environment

John Viera, the Global Director of Sustainability and Vehicle Environmental Matters said that Ford are dedicated to providing cleaner cars that are better for the environment. “Ford is providing customers the power of choice to save money at the pump – from our gas-free Focus Electric to our innovative EcoBoost technology that delivers leading gas-engine fuel economy. Californians have a legacy of embracing electric vehicles and programs like the Clean Vehicle Rebate Program provide an excellent incentive for the continued wider adoption of electric vehicles.”

The incentives were an inevitable measure eventually. There have been only 10 sold since the car’s release back in December of last year. 7 were sold in that month with 3 being sold in January. February saw no sales at all. The problem was the high price to pay. The rebate offered could mean more sales along with the fact that owners can avoid congestion by using HOV lanes.
