Motor Trend picks Ford 2012 F-150 as the Truck of the year 1

Motor Trend magazine have named the Ford 2012 F-150 as their Truck of the Year. This isn’t the first time that the Motor Truck has won an award from the magazine. They also won the award back in 2009, 2004 and 1997.

Rivals

The versatile pickup truck managed to fend off competition from the Nissan NV commercial van, the Toyota Tacoma and the Ram HD Laramie Longhorn.

Mark Fields – “Proud”

At the awards ceremony, the prize was handed to Mark Fields, the President of Ford Americas at the companies Headquarters in Dearbon. He said “We are proud to receive this award and even more pleased that our F-150 customers have additional validation of their choice,”

Ed Loh – “Ace”

Motor Trend editor and Chief Ed Loh has said that the vehicle performed well in all six judging criteria. His exact words were “It mastered every task we subjected it to, acing our instrumented tests at the proving grounds and swaying opinions during our real-world road evaluations,”

America’s bestselling car

Current statistics show that 516,639 trucks have been sold in America so far this year. The Ford F-150 is now America’s top selling car.

EcoBoost V6

The Ford 3.5 litre V6 EcoBoost engine variant is the vehicle that helped the truck claims the award. A majority 45 per cent of buyers are expected to opt for the EcoBoost engine, as it offers the best mix of performance and economy. This may come as a surprise as typical pickup truck owners in America prefer to have a V8 engine under the vehicles bonnet. The V6 engine offered within the F-150 line-up seems to now be the new way forward.  With fuel prices at a record high, motorists need a vehicle that provides economy rather than power.

The EcoBoost engines averages around 18 MPG compared to 14-17 MPG in the V8 models. Another incentive to opt for this particular engine is that the turbo charged version provides more towing power than the 5.0 litre V8 engine. Motor Tends were said to have tested the 5.0 litre V8 engine variants but were mainly influenced by the 3.5 litre engine.

We are sure that the Ford F-150 will continue to improve and win many more awards in the future.
