The aim will be to innovate and develop new products, design mobility solutions and provide business solutions.

Ford, based in Dearborn, Michigan in the US, has already pumped over one and a half billion pounds into their operations in India to date. The new hub will employ 3,000 people and 9,000 will be sourced from other centres in the city, which is based in the south of the country. The company aims to have the new facility operational by 2019, a statement released on Tuesday said.

Emerging markets like India are high on the priorities list for Ford where small, cheap, but powerful vehicles are popular and have enormous market potential. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd is very much the dominant player at the moment, with Ford hoping to muscle in on the action.

Outside its global headquarters back in the US, the new plant will be the car maker’s next biggest technology setup, and will include testing facilities and laboratories for vehicles and components. This will enable Ford to test future products in India.

It’s forecast that India will have become the world’s third-largest market by 2020, figures from IHS Automotive predict. This has led to car makers’ queuing up to best position themselves for a slice of the action.

“India is not only a vibrant market for cars and new mobility ideas, it also is rich with talent, technical expertise and ingenuity,” Bill Ford, executive chairman of Ford, said in the statement.

The new development will also include teams working on advanced financial analysis and future data analytics, a spokesman for the company said.
