Ford unveils spare wheel ‘hover board’ 0

Ford-unveils-spare-wheel-hover-boardFord has brought ‘Back to the Future’ a little closer to reality by introducing a Marty McFly style hover board that will ferry commuters the last few hundred feet from their parked cars to the office.

The American car maker boasts that the Carr-E fits snugly into the space reserved for a vehicle’s spare wheel and is capable of carrying a person weighing up to 19st up to 14 miles. It has a top speed of 11 mph.

The hover board can also be paired wirelessly to its owner, so can follow behind transporting heavy objects. It has ultrasonic sensors and GPS built in, so can negotiate oncoming objects and obstacles.

Ford believes the concept hover board is the perfect tool for the busy world of the future.

As city centres get more congested, vehicle access is likely to eventually become prohibited, therefore many drivers will have to complete the last mile of their journeys to work on foot.

The Carr-E was designed by Kilian Vas, a Ford systems engineer based in Cologne, Germany.

He said: “We really need to reinvent the wheel, to find new approaches to mobility.

“When developing the Carr-E, I was inspired by Ford’s expansion into both an auto and a mobility company, but I’m also aware of how rapidly cities are growing and how getting around urban areas will become progressively more complicated.

“I really wanted to create a device that makes commuting easier and more fun.”
